I’ll be honest here. I haven’t really touched my mantel since I took all of the Christmas decorations down. I’ve had a few random space fillers sitting up there, but I definitely wouldn’t have called it ‘decorated.’
Now that the sun has started showing its pretty face here in the Pacific Northwest and the branches are starting to bloom, I’ve had a strong desire to freshen things up in the house. So I spent the weekend puttering around the house and giving things a fresh new look.
I know I show my mantel decor a lot, but it really is my favorite spot to decorate and redecorate. Like I’ve said before, I use most of the same elements over and over, I just shuffle them around and add in smaller accessories for a new look.I started out by making my own vintage style Swiss cross sign, which I have been wanting to do for a long time. When I first painted the cross, I was craving color and painted it a really pretty green. But when Jacob got home, he asked why we had a medical marijuana sign on our mantel!? Oops, I didn’t think that through very well.Since I couldn’t have my green sign, I added in greenery with some faux boxwood and a green book I found at Goodwill. The 5 brass candlestick holders were also lucky Goodwill finds.I know I’ve shown this music sheet wreath before, I but I wanted to show a close up of it. I scored the music book that I used to make it at Goodwill and I love how you can see a few silver star stickers on it from whoever owned it before and earned stickers for practicing their music lessons.
Remember that ceramic garden stool that I painted red? Well the red has been driving me nuts for months. I love red and liked adding in some color, but it just didn’t flow well with the rest of the stuff in our living room. So while I was freshening things up this weekend, it got a makeover too.To give the stool a new look, I used leftover paint we already had in the garage. First it got a solid coat of dark grey. Once that was dry, I dry brushed navy blue over the top and when that was dry, I lightly dry brushed some BM Revere Pewter over the top. I wanted it to have some depth and look weathered and I think the combination of paint colors did just that. Up close, I think it kinda looks like denim, which I love.Anyways, those were just some minor little changes I made this weekend, but it did a lot in terms of giving our living room a freshened up look. Now I’ve got to take advantage of the beautiful weather and get outside and do some yard work!!Linking up to:
