Our home office is awful. The actual space is nice, but the (lack of) decor, storage, decent furniture in there is down right terrible. In fact, I’ve been working at our dining room table for the last few months because our office is such a wreck.
I’m totally embarrassed to show you this, but here is our home office in it’s current state…And the worst part is that it’s at the front of the house, right next to the front door so everyone who comes over sees the hideous mess.
Not only is our office lacking any sense of design, but we desperately need a larger desk to work at, more storage for books and craft supplies, and window treatments that offer more privacy while still letting light in. Plus, I really want a pretty and inspiring place to work in.
Here is our home office design plan I dreamed up that I’m hoping to start implementing ASAP.
First off, we need a larger work space to accommodate at least two people. To create a new desk, I’d like to use file cabinets as the base and purchase a butcher block desk top in a custom size to span the whole wall. I’d also like to cover the whole wall behind the desk in white wood planks and hang some shelves above the desk for added storage and pretty accessories. On the opposite side of the office, I’d like to find or build some tall bookcases that have closed storage on the bottom half to hide all of my craft stuff.
I’ve been craving a little more color in our house and I’d like to paint all of the walls in our office (other than the wood planked wall) in Benjamin Moore’s Normandy. It’s a gorgeous deep gray-blue and I’m smitten with it.
It drives me absolutely nuts to be sitting at the desk with the honeycomb shades open and every person that walks or drives by can see me sitting there. What I’d like is to add plantation shutters to the windows so that I can have them tilted open to let light in while still blocking people’s view of the inside of our office. It would be nice to have a little privacy and not feel like I’m sitting in a fishbowl.Ideally, I’d like to get rid of the carpet and add hardwood in the office along with this pretty textural round rug from World Market, but that will have to be a long-term goal as it’s not in the budget right now.So that’s the plan.
But the first step is to go de-junkify the office so that we can start with a clean slate.
I’ll keep you posted as we make progress!
